Port of Galveston Receives Funds To Restore Passenger Walkway Over Harborside Drive

10/8/2023

PictureWalkway Over Harborside Drive at the Port of Galveston
The Port of Galveston announced $3.85 million in state funding will be used to restore the enclosed passenger walkway that connects the Port of Galveston's parking garage to Cruise Terminal 25.
According to the Port of Galveston's press release the walkway was built in the 1990s and closed for about 20 years. In order to restore the walkway for use, the Port of Galveston will be doing work to add escalators or elevators on both the parking garage and Cruise Terminal #25 side. The dollar amount of the project is $4.85 million according to the Port of Galveston with the port contributing $1 million to the project.

Is the walkway currently open for cruise ship passengers to use?
The walkway is currently not open for cruise guests to use as of October 2023. Guests who park in the Port of Galveston's SMB parking garage will need to cross at street level on Harborside Drive to access the cruise terminal. I include this question in this post as it is one that I have been commonly asked in the past.

What other projects are taking place at the Port of Galveston?
In the same press release the Port of Galveston announced cargo complex improvements at the West Port Cargo Complex and an internal roadway construction that will connect areas between 31rd and 41st streets. The internal roadway project is expected to alleviate traffic on Harborside Drive.
