Alaska Land Tours

11/17/2013

Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska
There are several cruise lines (such as Princess, Holland America, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian) that offer Alaska Cruise/Land Tours. The land portion of this type of vacation gives the traveler an opportunity to visit the interior of Alaska which will add to the experience of visiting the ports of the inside passage of Alaska. Some people like to take the cruise part of the trip first in order to rest up for the land part, while others want to take the land part first so they can rest and take it easy on the cruise. Either way, it will be a memorable trip!

Domed Train in Alaska
Each cruise line offers different number of days for the land tour, anywhere from three to fourteen or more. Most land tours start in Fairbanks or Anchorage. The trip I went on stayed two nights in Fairbanks, one night in Denali, two nights in McKinley and two nights in Kenai. Part of the trip will be on a coach (bus) and part on a glass-domed train. There are many different choices that can be made  depending on how much time you have to spend and what you want to see, as well   as which cruise line you use.
If I ever get to do the land tour again, I would take the longer, Tundra trip into Denali National Park. Even though the History trip was interesting, I did not see the animals like those who went on the Tundra trip and that was disappointing. Two days in Denali would have been even better!

Take a look at the view of what you might see:

Train on Tracks
Water in Denali National Park
Red Landscape in Alaska
Kenai Peninsula
Not many of the land tours schedule the Kenai Peninsula into their itineraries, but this was a particularly beautiful part of Alaska. Be sure and schedule a catamaran excursion out of Seward into Kenai  Fjords National  Park. Spectacular and worth every penny!!

RyG's Cruise Guide Alaska
Unlike the cruise part of the trip where all meals are included, you pay separately for your meals on the land part so be sure and budget for that when planning your trip. When packing for the cruise/land tour, you will have to consider that the weather may be very different for each part of the trip. Don’t forget that there are laundry facilities on the cruise ship which should reduce the amount of clothes that you need to pack. As always make sure you research the itinerary, prices, and what is included.
