Location and Weather: The morning was sunny and the seas calm as we sailed towards Iceland. By mid-day, it was misty and the seas rocky. Later in the afternoon, it was very foggy with strong winds and rough seas. By evening, all was clear and calm again. For a short time during the night, we were inside the Arctic Circle.
Destination Lectures: There were two destination lectures held in the Princess Theater. The first featured Akureyri and Isafjordur, our first two ports in Iceland, and the second featured Reykjavik, our third port. Both lectures were led by a destination expert who was very knowledgeable about Iceland in general as well as the three ports we would be visiting. He not only gave us historical information about each port, but also told us what we could expect to see.
Enrichment Lecture: There was also an enrichment lecture: Northern Lights and Other Sights led by an expert on auroras, noctilucent clouds, polar satellites and other celestial sights that we might see during the cruise. He was very excited about the possibility of our seeing the aurora borealis during the three nights we would be in the Iceland area. Since the aurora borealis is usually visible in Sept-April, the chances were very good for a sighting if we had clear skies during the coming nights. The hours expected were between midnight and 3am. We were told that we could register to be called on our stateroom phone if one was sighted.
Scheduled Activities: Throughout the day there were various activities planned so that there was something for everyone to participate in if they wanted to. In Club Fusion there was a Zumba exercise group that met morning and afternoon and a line dance class midmorning. Ping pong tournament and pickle ball games were available during the morning hours while the weather was still good on the decks. A basic photography seminar was held in the Wheelhouse Bar for aspiring photographers. My favorite was the afternoon tea in the Coral Dining Room. It was available every afternoon, but it was especially appealing on those sea days when you weren’t hurrying back from an excursion. Along with hot tea, small sandwiches and various tasty desserts were offered; but my favorite was the warm scones served with a dollop of strawberry jam and whipped cream. It was hard to eat only one, but dinner would be served soon.

Unscheduled Activities: In the afternoons the Skywalkers Nightclub on Deck 19 was available for those wanting a quiet place to read and the Palm Dining Room Deck 6 was available for getting together with fellow guests for cards, mahjong or board games. Movie time was another choice for movie lovers. Of course, the fitness center on Deck 16 was always available during the day for those wanting to keep in shape. My favorite exercise activity was walking around Deck 7. Many of the cruisers enjoyed the fresh air while they walked/jogged their laps (2.3 laps = 1 mile). Of course, during rainy weather or rough seas, Deck 7 was closed to this activity.
Dinner and Evening Entertainment: Many varied selections were on the evening’s dinner menu and it was difficult to choose which ones to order. As usual each was delicious and very well prepared. There were also many musical choices for entertainment in different locations and at different times throughout the evening, everything from piano and cocktails, guitar and vocal entertainer, music through the decades, piano melodies, 70’s disco, and the 50s & 60s rock n’ roll dance party. The Cabaret Showtime in the Princess Theater starred an extremely talented singer who was truly worthy of the standing ovation that the audience gave her at the end of her show!
Time Change: It was time again to set our clocks and watches back one hour as we moved west. It was a good way to keep from experiencing jet lag when we reached our final destination.
