Arrival:
Even before the ship anchored off the coast of Grand Cayman, we were up early to get breakfast and then meet in the Princess Theater at 6:50am for our excursion on the island. After our group was loaded on one of the many tenders that was sent out from George Town to transport us to shore, it didn’t take very long before we were arriving at the port. It was a smooth and enjoyable ride.

Grand Cayman:
There are three islands that make up the Cayman Islands – Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac – and they are a British Overseas Territory. They were first accidentally visited by Columbus in 1503 and named Las Tortugas, The Turtles, because of the extremely large number of turtles on the island. Later in 1586 Sir Francis Drake visited the islands and renamed them the Cayman Islands after the alligator-like creature, the caiman, which was discovered inhabiting the islands. For many years there were pirates, shipwrecked sailors and deserters living on the islands. Today there are turtles but no alligators!

Excursions:
There were many different excursions on Grand Cayman including visiting the turtle center, dolphin encounter, stingray swim, snorkel, scenic drive to the beaches and certified scuba diving. Although we had tried to come to Grand Cayman on two other cruises, this would be our first time on the island so we chose the excursion “Coast-to-Coast” to give us an overview of the entire island. Our coach driver/tour guide started our tour at one end of the island, stopping at several spots and telling us about all the places we were seeing before we reached the other end of the island. Stops were the Tortuga Rum Cake Center, famous little town of Hell, the blowholes along the beach, the Wreck of the Ten Sails and a final stop at Starfish Point. The island is immaculate (hefty fines for littering) and very picturesque. On our way back to the ship we drove through George Town which is a short walking distance from the port. There were many interesting shops and eateries but since it was Sunday and also a holiday, not many were open.

Afternoon activities:
Since so many passengers were on shore, there were limited activities for the afternoon. Some sports related ones included two NFL games shown on the big screen on Deck 16 Midship and also on stateroom TVs, Basketball Around the World on Center Court, Deck 19 Aft and Golf Putting Challenge on Princess Links, Deck 19 Aft. Another fun activity was Arts and Crafts: Origami in the Crown Grill, Deck 7 Aft.

Dinner and Entertainment:
We had another delicious dinner in the DaVinci dining room which included tropical fruit, quiche, seafood salad and, for dessert, Princess Love Boat and apple cake. After dinner, Travis Turpin, a wonderful impressionist/singer, was performing in the Princess Theater. He was so good that the audience gave him a standing ovation!
