Shore Excursion to Strasbourg:  At 8:30am, after another delicious breakfast, we picked up our coach assignment and ship cards from the reception desk and disembarked to walk the few yards to get on our coach.  (Note: So far there have never been any lines to wait in to get off the ship or on the coach. Very easy process). Since we were docked at Gambsheim in Germany, we had to cross the Rhine River to get to Strasbourg, France.  We drove around some of the surrounding areas of Strasbourg before heading to the city center. Our drive took us past the governmental buildings and some of the beautiful architecture Strasbourg is famous for. When we reached the Petite France area, we began our guided walking tour. It is a very beautiful and historic area with its old buildings, half-timbered houses, canals, defensive towers and colorful shops. We followed the Grand Rue to Cathedral Square where we were able to go inside the Cathedrale de Notre Dame (Strasbourg Cathedral) which is one of Europe’s great Gothic cathedrals.  It was very crowded, but we were able to get an up close look at the famous astronomical clock.  We had some time for exploring the area around the cathedral but had to make a decision to either stay in Strasbourg or walk back to the coach to return to the ship for lunch. We chose to go back to the ship; but after lunch, we were given the opportunity to take a free shuttle back into the city of Strasbourg. After a few hours, those who stayed in the city and those who took the shuttle back in were all picked up and brought back to the ship.

Cooking Demonstration:  Later in the afternoon in the Lounge, the executive chef demonstrated how to prepare a Flammkuchen .  He called for a volunteer from the audience and she helped him with the preparation. Afterward the members of the audience were given a sample. Interesting!

Cast Off: The ship left Gambsheim for Mannheim, Germany.

Evening Events:
The usual daily briefing by the program director informed us about the excursion and events of the next day. Dinner was wonderful, as usual, but was somewhat of a surprise. Most of the meals had consisted of regional specialties, but tonight one of the menu choices was a turkey and dressing dinner with pumpkin pie for dessert.  It felt like home. After dinner, the program director directed a general knowledge quiz in the Lounge. It was what we refer to as a trivia quiz.
