Cruise Etiquette Part 1

8/24/2013

On cruise ships there are many different passengers from different places.  Most people come onboard the ship to enjoy themselves, relax, and have a vacation.  There are some passengers who lack basic manners.  I put this blog post together to set some basic guidelines that if all people followed the ship may be a better place!
Cruise Ship Elevator
Elevators
1.  Wait until passengers exit the elevator before entering the elevator.
2.  When entering an elevator move as far back as possible to allow room for some other people to enter the elevator.
3.  If you are close to the buttons in the elevator offer to push the floor button for other cruisers.
4.   Don't push floor buttons in the elevator that you or nobody else needs to stop at.  Many passengers get annoyed when the elevator stops at floors and nobody is waiting or needs to get off.  In addition, if you are waiting for an elevator and you push the button to call the elevator to your floor make sure you are not pushing the button just for fun.  Passengers in the elevator may become annoyed when they stop at a random floor because someone pushed the call button and left.
5.   Cover your mouth when coughing and cover your nose if you need to sneeze in the elevator.  Since the elevator is a small space germs can spread quickly.
6.   Make sure you are paying attention to what floor the elevator is going to so you can get off in the right place.
7.   Be considerate to other passengers in the elevator.  If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all.
8.   Don't pass gas in the elevator.  Like I mentioned before the elevator is a small confined space that may/may not have any a/c.
9.   If you are able bodied and willing use the stairs!   I have found that when using the stairs I can get to my floor faster than using the elevator.  Plus you are freeing up some space for others who need the elevators to use them.
10.  Don't ride up and down the elevator without a purpose!  There are some children who will gang up in the elevator and ride it for hours at a time.

Carnival Triumph Outside Chairs Area
Buffet Line
1.   When going through the buffet line make sure you are using the serving utensils to serve yourself food.  Don't use your hands!
2.   Wash your hands before eating or serving yourself food.
3.  Do not cough, sneeze or burp on the food.  Also refrain from touching any of the food for any reason.
4.  If you drop the serving utensil tell a crew member.  Do not stick the dirty utensil back into the food.
5.   If you see any food get contaminated by another guest tell a crew member!
6.   Do not cut in line.  There are times when some people will cut in line to get one food item.  Some people are ok with this and others are not.  If you forget to get silverware from the line you should ask the person who you are cutting between to either let you grab silverware or to hand you silverware.
7.    In the buffet room don't run!  You might slip on the floor or knock somebody carrying a tray of food over.
8..   Don't take more food than you know you can eat!  Try not to be wasteful!

Carnival Ecstasy Stateroom Hallway
Stateroom Hallway
1.   Keep noise to a minimal in the stateroom hallway.  You never know who is sleeping.
2.   Don't use stateroom hallways as a cut through unless you really need to do so.  Some people get annoyed at constant footsteps in the hallway outside their room.
3.   Do not slam your stateroom door.
4.   Do not turn doorknobs and knock on stateroom doors randomly.  This can disturb the people inside.
5.  Do not interfere with stateroom steward's carts.  This includes taking things like towels, toilet paper, literature, and mints (I'm guilty when it comes to the mints).   I have seen passengers take a large stash of things from stateroom steward's carts.

Carnival Miracle Balcony Stateroom
Inside Your Stateroom & Balcony
1.  Keep the TV volume low because people in the rooms next to yours may be able to hear.
2.  Do not slam your stateroom door.
3.  Don't jump on the floor because people under you may be able to hear you.
4.  Don't slam your balcony door if you have a balcony.
5.  Keep noise at a minimal on the balcony because other people on other balconies may be able to hear you.

Carnival Elation Dining Room
Main Dining Room
1.  Try to follow the assigned dress code for the day/evening.  If you cannot do this you may run the risk of not being allowed to enter the dining room or looking silly.  Try to dress up close to the guidelines.
2.  Make sure you know what silverware is yours.
3.  Put your napkin in your lap.
4.  Wait until all people have their food before you start to eat.
5.  Be nice to the servers!  If you are nice to them the more likely you are to get good service (may or may not work).
6.   Don't make dinner awkward!  Try to say a few words to tablemates that you don't know.
7.   When leaving push in your chair.  When I am leaving I also try to tell the servers thank you for their service.

Should I get a balcony stateroom for my Alaska cruise vacation?

8/17/2013

Tracy Arm Fjord - Appraoching Sawyer Glacier
Are you planning an Alaska cruise vacation? Or are you trying to decide on a type of stateroom for your Alaska cruise? Having a balcony in Alaska is completely different than having a balcony in the Caribbean, Bahamas, or Mexico.  This is not because of the balcony itself, but in Alaska the view from the ship is different from a Caribbean, Bahamas, or Mexico cruise vacation.  Alaska is full of nature and many people cruise to Alaska to see scenery (mountains, glaciers, etc.) and wildlife.
A balcony is a  semi-private place to be able to watch the views go by.  You won't have to fight for space on the public open decks to be able to see the view.  You will be able to step out from your room onto a space that is considered only yours & your cabin-mates to see to the views of Alaska.
Many cruise lines and ships that sail to Alaska have at least one scenic cruising day built into an itinerary.  Some cruise lines go to Glacier Bay National Park while others go through Tracy Arm Fjord. On scenic cruise days the outside decks crowd very quickly because railing space is limited, especially at the front of the ship. If you have a balcony you can sit or stand on your balcony and not have to worry about finding a spot to get some great pictures.
Are you worried that because your balcony is on one side you won't get to see the other?  Cruise ships typically will turn 360 degrees at  glaciers or big landmarks to allow both sides to see the view. Other times cruise ships will enter a fjord and cruise to a certain point and then turn around to come out.  One side gets the view on the trip up and the other side gets the view coming back.  Before booking check with your cruise line to find out what their procedure is with this matter.
What will I see from my balcony?   You will get to see the view and you will also have a chance of seeing wildlife from the ship.  On my recent trip to Alaska I got to see a pod of whales, seals, and many different types of birds from my balcony.
Are you worried about children and a balcony stateroom?  Worrying about your children on a balcony is a valid concern of many parents.   Many cruise ships have bolts or locks on balcony doors that are high up to prevent small children from unlocking them.  If this is a concern of yours contact your cruise line to find out about balcony locks on your ship.  Another concern of yours may be the railing.  Railing heights may vary by ship so you will probably want to find out details about the railing from your cruise line.  If your children listen to your directions you could tell them that they are not allowed on the balcony without a trusted adult and that they are not allowed to climb the rail, furniture or sit on the rail.  Don't let your children be unsupervised on the balcony!  If you don't think your children are old enough to be on a balcony (supervised or unsupervised) you should consider sticking with an interior or a stateroom with a window.
Getting a balcony stateroom is a great way to see Alaska and I recommend a balcony to anyone who is planning a trip to Alaska.  You are probably already paying a large amount on money to go to Alaska, so why not pay a little more to be able to enjoy the view from the comfort of your own stateroom?
